The court reporter uses a machine to record everything that is said in the courtroom. The court reporter can then print out a hard copy of the proceedings (known as a transcript) at the request of the court or of an individual (there is a charge for this service), or if the case goes to the Appellate Court for review. They are sometimes called upon by the Judge or counsel to read back something that was said during a proceeding. The jury, during deliberation, may ask the reporter to read back something that was said earlier in the proceedings.
